By definition, solitary confinement is a form of imprisonment distinguished by living in single cells with little or no meaningful contact to other inmates, strict measures to control contraband, and the use of additional security measures and equipment. Commonly known as “the hole” among inmates and prison guards, it has received severe criticism for having detrimental long term psychological effects on the inmates and, to some and in some cases, constituting torture. This exhibition space allows viewers to learn the date from visual statistics, gain first-hand experience of the living conditions, and finally, understand the effects of solitary confinement on the minds of the inmates.
